Finished size

Toddler hat body 17″, brim 15.5″ (stretchy), height 7.5″ (including brim)
Child Hat body 20″, brim 18″ (stretchy), height 8″ (including brim)

The toddler hat is meant to fit about 1-3 years; the child hat is meant to fit about 4-8 years (maybe 10 or 11 years with some children, like my 10 year old; it fits him perfectly).

Continuing the height of the hat without working the ribbing may work for a larger head. Be aware that the child size, worked at gauge, according to the instructions, uses every bit of the yarn. There is maybe about a foot of yarn remaining. If you end up not having enough yarn to make the ribbing, take out a round of the hat body and try again. One round won’t make a lot of difference.

Materials

  • DMC “Top This!” (approx. 98 yds) (The yarn is about a bulky weight and includes the animal head.)
  • Suggested hook sizes: L-11 [8mm] (larger hook) and J-10 [6mm] (smaller hook)
  • Stitch marker (or small piece of scrap yarn)
  • Needle (for weaving ends and seaming brim)

Notes

The yarn here is a continuous strand of only 98 yards of different colors and textures to match the included animal head. It means that you will want to maintain gauge as close as possible because there are only 98 yards included.

Hat is worked top-down, in unjoined rounds, brim is applied once the hat body is finished.

Each round is worked in spiral fashion, without joining rounds. Use a stitch marker or scrap piece of yarn to mark the last stitch of each round so you won’t lose your place in the round.

Gauge

After round 6, approx. 4″
After round 8, approx. 5″
