Note

I have envisioned this shawl to have fringe like I did for this one.

You can read more about this project here.

You are, of course, welcome to place any border (or not) around the completed shawl. If you would like a long fringe like this, each strand is 24″ long and I placed two strands in each mesh block along the edge. You would need to plan on having about 400 yards extra of the cotton thread.

Stitch Guide
Each solid square is equal to 4 dc. Each open square is equal to (1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc). The dc at the end of each square also counts as the first dc of the next square. For example, a solid square followed by an open square is 4 dc, ch 2, 1 dc. Solid squares count as “solid mesh” and open squares count as “open mesh”.

Tip: When finished with one ball/cone of yarn, attach the next ball/cone only at the beginning or ending of a row to aid in the weaving of the loose end.

Instructions

Starting with Row 1 of chart, using Stitch Guide, ch 9, sk 8 ch, dc in next ch (first open mesh created and row 1 complete). Continue following chart to create remaining rows. At end of row 180, fasten off.

Each row after row 1 increases by two mesh blocks.

To begin the next row, ch 7, dc in first dc of prev row (one extra block created).

To end a row, ch 2, work double treble (dtr) in bottom of last dc worked (dtr will bend to form two sides of the block).
