Behind the Crochet Design Inspiration
I designed this many years ago. I was asked to make something that look like a fabric, ready-to-wear set.
When I did it, I had absolutely no idea what I was doing. I’ll give you a little bit of my thought process. It’s pretty simple. I went with a lobster look. Yes, lobster.
When I made this, there were NO mermaid tails. Imagine a time when there were no mermaid tails in crochet patterns!
I say again that I had NOTHING to go on. You guys have it so easy now. hahaha
I made the cute little fins at the bottom and there are two straight lines going up the front to give it more of a curve. Okay, looking at all the mermaid tails these days, it’s certainly different!
I think the cutest part here is the little top anyway. The top itself is sort of basic. It’s those ruffly little sleeves that start directly on the fabric, worked as surface stitch and then worked out. So cute.
A mermaid’s tail can look like a lobster, right? Mermaids aren’t real anyway so I went with the lobster interpretation. Don’t question the designer. ha!

RED HEART® Super Saver®: 1 skein each 672 Spring Green A and 373 Petal Pink B.
Crochet Hooks: 5.5mm US I-9 and 6.5mm US K-10.5.
Yarn needle; 2 split lock stitch markers.

Directions are for Infant size 3 months; changes for sizes 6, 9 and 12 months are in parentheses.
Gauge/Tension:
GAUGE: 10 sts = 4”; 25 rows = 8” in sc with smaller hook. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge.
