Finished Sizes

Small (Medium, Large): Size small is to fit 32″ bust circumference. Size medium is to fit 36″. Size Large is to fit 40″. Garment measurement as shown in photographs is 1″ greater than actual bust measurement.

Skill Level

Experienced. May cause weeping and/or throwing of yarn across the room.

Yarn

Cascade 220 Superwash Sport (100% merino wool, 136 yd/50g, CYCA size 3): 8 (9, 10) skeins.

Hooks

Sizes G/7 (4.5mm) and F/5 (3.75mm). Adjust hook size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

Blocked Gauge

16 sts and 19 rows = 4” in Main-body patt with larger hook. Note: Stitch gauge, especially at the armhole height, changes slightly after blocking due to the weight of the garment. Wet block your swatch for accuracy.

Notes

Garment is made in four pieces worked vertically, from side to side, then seamed. The ribbing is worked at the same time as the main-body patt. Special care needs to be taken when beginning or finishing the ribbing and continuing with Main-body patt. Use a stitch marker, if necessary.

If the end of a row appears to pull, make last st of each row into both loops of the st.

A typical decrease single crochet is not recommended when decreasing due to the nature of the Main-body patt.

Row 4 of Main-body patt includes a dc worked in sc 4 rows below. When there isn’t sufficient room remaining to work the dropped st, work a sc in BL only instead. The number of BL sc worked at the end of the row will vary according to the location in the garment. This row is of primary concern in maintaining the stitch pattern throughout, as the dropped sts need to be aligned throughout.

Upper back of garment is intentionally approximately 1” wider than upper front of garment.

Designer Note: This pattern was originally published in Interweave Crochet, Winter 2009. Although I sold first rights of publication to Interweave, I retain the right to publish and this is an excerpt of the pattern from the magazine. I’ve included the first three sizes only. The original Interweave pattern includes sizes small through 3X. If you would like to purchase the pattern in its entirety, it is available HERE.

Stitch Guide

Main-body pattern

When working odd-numbered rows, after working Rib patt, do not ch 1 at the beg of a row. When working even-numbered rows, do not turn at the end, where Rib patt is required. On row 4, the final sts of a row should always be a BL sc. The number of BL sc at the end of a row 4 will fluctuate throughout, dependent upon the current location in the pattern.

Row 1: Ch 1, ssc in each sc across, turn.

Row 2: [RS] Ch 1, working in BL only, sc in each sc, turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, ssc in each sc across, turn.

Row 4: Ch 1, working in BL only, sc in each of 2 sc, * dc in both lps of sc 4 rows below, sk the sc behind on current row, working in BL only, sc in each of 4 sc, rep from * across, turn.

Row 5: Ch 1, ssc in each st across, turn.

Row 6: Ch 1, ssc in each sc across, turn.

Repeat rows 1-6 throughout for stitch pattern.

Blocking

Immerse all pieces in water completely, gently remove water, roll in towel to remove excess water, lie flat to dry, moving ribbing into shape, if necessary. (Ribbing biases slightly.) Allow to dry completely.

Seaming

With yarn needle, seam shoulders and set in sleeves. Seam sides of sleeves and sides of body.

Trim

With smaller hook, join yarn with sl st at either shoulder seam.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc evenly around neckline, sl st to first sc.

Tip: The first time you do this, one side of the v-neck may be floppy. Don’t worry. I did it as well on my first try. On the non-floppy side, count your stitches and make a note of the number. Remove the round and ensure that you place the same number of stitches evenly on each side.

Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc around, except sk sts at lower depth of neckline, where necessary, to accommodate the curve, sl st to first sc. Fasten off. Block again, if necessary. Weave in all ends securely.
