Peacock Lace Infinity Cowl Free Crochet Pattern

If you want a cowl to lie more neatly around your neck, try out a mobius design. It’s an infinity loop so it has a little half twist that allows it to overlap in the front.

You can achieve this look by learning the technique of working on both the top and bottom of your foundation chain at the same time, as you’ll find in this free crochet pattern.

Gauge

One 12-stitch repeat for 6 rounds measures 4″. It’s always difficult to gauge lace so getting close to the finished measurements is the goal here. It’s a cowl so it doesn’t have to be an absolutely perfect match to my tension.

Multiple

If you would like to make a longer project, as more of an infinity scarf, add any multiple of 12 to the initial stitch count. Additional yardage will be required.

Note

Project is worked in moebius technique, in the round, without seaming.

Special Stitches

Fan: [(dc, ch 1) 4 times, dc] in indicated stitch or space

Shell (Sh): [2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc] in indicated stitch or space

Instructions

Round 1:

A: Ch 96, without twisting, join with sl st to form a ring, ch 1, sc in same ch as joining, with stitch marker, mark top of sc, ch 3, sk 5 ch, *Fan (see Special Stitches) in next ch, ch 3, sk 5 ch**, sc in next ch, ch 3, sk 5 ch, rep from * around to marker, ending last repeat at **-8 Fans.

B: Flip the marked sc slightly, sc in bottom unworked loop of chain of marked sc, ch 3, sk 5 ch, *Fan in bottom unworked loop of Fan, ch 3, sk 5 ch**, sc in bottom unworked loop of sc, ch 3, sk 5 ch, rep from * around to marker, ending last repeat at **, turn marked sc slightly, sl st to top of marked sc as you would normally. Full moebius join completed-16 Fans total, top and bottom of foundation chain.

Move stitch marker up as work progresses. Note that, when working in a moebius, the foundation chain is in the center of the project and each round actually goes around the top and bottom giving the illusion of two rounds worked.

Round 2: Ch 3, [dc, ch 1, 2 dc] in same sc, * ch 1, [sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 3] 3 times, sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, Sh in next sc, rep from *, ending with sl st in top of beg ch-3, sl st in next dc and in next ch-1 sp.

Round 3: Ch 3, [dc, ch 1, 2 dc] in same ch-1 sp, *ch 2, [sc in next ch-3 sp, ch 3] 2 times, sc in next ch-3 sp, ch 2, Sh (see Special Stitches) in ch-1 sp of next Sh, rep from *, ending with sl st in top of beg ch-3, sl st in next dc and in next ch-1 sp.

Round 4: Ch 3, [dc, ch 1, 2 dc] in same ch-1 sp, *ch 3, [sc in next ch-3 sp, ch 3] twice, Sh in ch-1 sp of next Sh, rep from *, ending with sl st in top of beg ch-3, sl st in next dc and in next ch-1 sp.

Round 5: Ch 1, sc in same ch-1 sp, *ch 3, sk ch-3 sp, Fan in next ch-3 sp, ch 3, sc in ch-1 sp of next Sh, rep from *, ending with sl st in first sc.

Round 6: Ch 3, [dc, ch 1, 2 dc] in same sc, *ch 1, [sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 3] 3 times, sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, Sh in next sc, rep from *, ending with sl st in top of beg ch-3, sl st in next dc and in next ch-1 sp. Fasten off. With yarn needle, weave in ends securely.
