Speckled Cloche Hat Free Crochet Pattern

The cloche style hat is my favorite of all others. I love the frame it forms around the face. I especially love this one with the faux hat band. That buckle is so cute. The fantastic texture is made with easy crossed doubles.

Speckled Beanie Hat

Gauge

After round 4, measures 3.25″ across
After round 8, measures 6″ across

Note

Hat is made from top down, in the round.

When changing colors, drop the unused color and begin using the new color. Do not pull too tightly or it will buckle the fabric. Alternatively, you are welcome to cut off each color round, if you want. It will just mean more ends to weave in later and more yardage used.

The recommended product is more than enough to complete the hat as instructed. You could even make two hats from it, maybe even three.

Crochet Pattern Instructions

Instructions

Round 1: With A, ch 2, 8 sc in second ch from hook, sl st to first sc: 8 sc.

Round 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in same sc as joining, 2 sc in each remaining sc around, sl st to first sc: 16 sc.

Round 3: Ch 1, 2 sc in same sc as joining, *sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc, rep from * to last sc, sc in last sc, with B, sl st to first sc, drop A: 24 sts.

Note: Crossed doubles are made on the following round and on even rounds until the solid band and once more at the edge. There is a chain between the cross; i.e. double crochet where indicated, chain 1, reach back a little and make the other double crochet. The beginning crossed double is a chain 4 (counts as first dc plus chain 1) with a double crochet crossed in front of it. There are several videos on YouTube for crossed doubles; just remember that this one has a chain 1 in between the two doubles.

Round 4: With B, ch 4, dc in next stitch BEFORE joining (beginning crossed double made), *sk sc after crossed double, dc in next sc, ch 1, dc in skipped sc, rep from * around, with A, sl st to third ch of beginning ch-4, drop B: 12 crossed doubles.

Round 5: With A, ch 1, sc in same ch as joining, *sc in ch-1 sp, sc in next 2 dc, rep from * to last ch-1 sp, sc in ch-1 sp and in last dc, with B, sl st to first sc, drop A: 36 sc.

Round 7: With A, ch 1, sc in same ch as joining, *sc in ch-1 sp, sc in next 2 dc, rep from * to last ch-1 sp, sc in ch-1 sp and in last dc, with B, sl st to first sc, drop A: 54 sc.

Round 8: With B, ch 4, dc in next stitch before joining, *sk sc after crossed double, dc in next sc, ch 1, dc in skipped sc, rep from * around, with A, sl st to third ch of beginning ch-4, drop B: 27 crossed doubles.

Note: Previously, increasing was accomplished on the crossed double rounds. Now that there is no more increasing, there is an extra skipped stitch included in the instructions. This is just a note bringing it to your attention.

Round 10: With B, ch 4, sk first stitch BEFORE joining, dc in next stitch BEFORE joining, *sk 2 sc after crossed double, dc in next sc, ch 1, dc in FIRST skipped sc (ignore the second skipped sc), rep from * around, with A, sl st to third ch of beginning ch-4, drop B: 27 crossed doubles.

Round 11: With A, ch 1, sc in same ch as joining, *sc in ch-1 sp, sc in next 2 dc, rep from * to last ch-1 sp, sc in ch-1 sp and in last dc, with B, sl st to first sc, drop A: 81 sc.
