I was asked to design a lightweight throw using six completely different square designs. Because it was to be lacy, I decided to stitch the squares together in the join-as-you-go technique.
It doesn’t interrupt the lace the way whipstitching would do.
When I was designing this one, I remember stitching up each square and then somehow trying to figure out how to end the square with the same number of chain spaces so the join-as-you-go would work consistently.
I never knew how difficult a task that would turn out to be! ha!
My efforts paid off and I made this gorgeous lacy throw which would be perfect in any setting where you wouldn’t need a heavy afghan. I picture it on a wooden porch swing or draped over a lounge chair.
If you prefer to make this afghan in one square design and perhaps change the colors throughout, that is completely doable.

If you are new to the join-as-you-go technique, the instructions can be confusing. It’s helpful to see join-as-you-go in action. It doesn’t even need to be the same pattern. You just need to learn what’s actually going on and then you replace the number of chains or stitches from the actual pattern.
I’ve done a video in the technique for a different square. Trust me. Once you learn what is actually happening, the instructions will make more sense.
