Technique: Regular Crochet

Although the shorts can be made alone, if you would like the set as shown in the photo above, here are the links you will need. Be certain to also print your graph for the tank top, in both front and back, in the size you need.

Star Embellishment

Materials

  • Red Heart Luster Sheen (335 yards per 4 ounces): 1 (1, 2) skeins (or approximately 310 (330, 350) yards
  • Suggested hook sizes: G (4mm) and F (3.75mm) (or sizes needed to meet gauge)
  • Tapestry needle (for weaving ends)
  • 1/8″ elastic: 34 (36, 38)” (cut into two equal pieces)
  • Sewing thread: white (for sewing elastic together to make a ring)
  • Sewing needle (for sewing elastic together to make a ring

The yarn used in this project (Red Heart Luster Sheen) has been discontinued. I believe Patons Grace would be a good substitute.

Finished Sizes

Instructions are written for size 9 months (with 12 and 18 months written in parenthesis).


Boricua Patriotic Infant Short Sizes

Gauge

A swatch worked with larger hook in single crochet across 17 stitches for 22 rows equals approximately 4″ square.

Notes

Shorts are worked from side-to-side, vertically, starting with center back.

Crochet Pattern Instructions

First Leg

With larger hook, ch 38 (41, 44), sc in second ch from hook and in each rem ch across, turn.

*Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn, rep from * until a total of 66 (68, 70) rows have been completed, do not cut off.

Inseam

Ch 1, sc across 27 (30, 31) sc, turn, leaving rem sts unworked.

*Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn, rep from * until 5 (5, 7) rows have been completed for Inseam, do not cut off.

Opposite Leg

Ch 11 (11, 13), sc in second ch from hook, in each rem ch and in each sc across, turn.

*Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn, rep from * until a total of 66 (68, 70) rows have been completed for Opposite Leg, do not cut off.

Opposite Inseam

Sl st across 10 (10, 12) sc, ch 1, sc in each rem sc across, turn.

*Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn, rep from * until a total of 5 (5, 7) rows have been completed for Opposite Inseam, fasten off.

Seaming

With yarn needle, sew back seam by sewing the final row to the first row, only across 27 (30, 31) sc, do not sew together the leg and crotch area.

Waistband

Preparation: Join ends of elastic with sewing needle and thread to form two separate rings. There will be some overlapping to ensure a secure joining. The right side of garment is determined by which side you seamed.

Rnd 1: With smaller hook and right side of garment facing you, join yarn with sl st to back seam, ch 1, sc evenly around, working along side of each sc row, sl st to first sc.

Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc around, sl st to first sc.

Rnd 3: Ch 1, holding one ring of elastic up to your work, work sc in each sc around, working OVER the elastic, sl st to first sc.

Rnd 4: Rep rnd 3 with second ring of elastic, fasten off.

Inseam Gusset

With larger hook, ch 24 (24, 29), sc in second ch from hook and in each rem ch, turn.

*Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn, rep from * until a total of 5 (6, 7) rows have been completed, fasten off.

Seaming

Turn shorts inside out so that the wrong side is facing you. With yarn needle, sew the Inseam Gusset to the inner leg of right side front, across the crotch and down the inner leg of left side front, turn work so the seat is facing you, sew opposite long side to leg, across crotch and down the other seat side leg, weave in all ends securely.
