Notes

For the dishcloth shown in the photo above, I used Aunt Lydia’s Denim Rose and Aunt Lydia’s Denim Milk for the increasing. I cut off the Rose color after the increasing and added another strand of the Milk color and worked even for 3 rows. I then cut off one of the strands of the Milk color and began working with the Aunt Lydia’s Denim Chambray on the decreasing side of the
dishcloth.

For the first few rows of the square motif, your work may look anything but a nice clean corner. As you add more rows, it will start getting more stable. Be sure to tighten the beginning
strings, which will help considerably with straightening your corner. Once you place a border around your square, the instability of the first few rows is corrected.

To increase by one stitch at the beginning of a row, skip the first vertical bar, yarn over and insert hook under next vertical bar to pull up a loop.

To increase by one stitch at the end of the row, pull up loops under all vertical bars to within the last vertical bar. Yarn over before inserting hook under last vertical bar to pull up a loop.

To decrease by one stitch at the beginning of a row, skip the first vertical bar and insert hook under two vertical bars before pulling up a loop.

To decrease by one stitch at the end of the row, pull up loops under all vertical bars to within the last two vertical bars and insert hook under two vertical bars before pulling up a loop.

Managing loops: While working with the cro-hook, you may find that you have too many loops on your hook at one time for the project to be manageable. In this instance, pull up as many loops as are comfortable for you (you DO NOT have to complete the row). Turn your hook over and close all the loops except for the last four or five. Turn your hook back over and continue pulling up loops. Repeat this process as necessary to complete the row.

Crochet Pattern Instructions

With cro-hook, ch 2. Sc in second ch from hook.

Increasing

Row 1: (Opening Stitches) YO and insert hook under the two vertical bars formed by the sc and pull up a loop. (Closing Stitches) Turn your hook so that the back of your work is facing you. Push the loops to the opposite hook. Attach CB with slip knot to this hook. Pull this loop through ONE loop on hook. * YO and pull through TWO loops (one of CB and one of CA). Repeat from * across, until there is one loop left on hook. Do not turn.

Row 2: (Opening Stitches) With CB, using basic cro-hooking technique, increase by two stitches, once at the beginning and once at the end (see Notes). (Closing Stitches) Turn your hook so that the back of your work is facing you. Push the loops to the opposite hook. With CA, YO and pull through ONE loop on hook. * YO and pull through TWO loops (one of CA and one of CB). Repeat from * across, until there is one loop left on hook. Do not turn.

Row 3: (Opening Stitches) With CA, using basic cro-hooking technique, increase by two stitches, once at the beginning and once at the end (see Notes). (Closing Stitches) Turn your hook so that the back of your work is facing you. Push the loops to the opposite hook. With CB, YO and pull through ONE loop on hook. * YO and pull through TWO loops (one of CB and one of CA). Repeat from * across, until there is one loop left on hook. Do not turn.

Repeat Rows 2 and 3 until you have completed a row with 39 stitches.

Work 3 rows with no increase or decrease.

Decreasing

(Opening Stitches) Using basic cro-hooking technique, decrease by two stitches, once at the beginning and once at the end (see Notes). (Closing Stitches) Close normally.

Repeat until 3 loops remain. YO and draw through all 3 loops, turning your work if necessary to ensure that the YO is with the color you would like to use as the border color. Cut off the other color and fasten securely.

Border

With regular crochet hook, ch 1. Turn work, if necessary, so that the right side of the square is facing you. Work sc evenly around, with 3 sc in each corner. Sl st to the first sc. Work two more rounds of sc, with 3 sc in each corner. Fasten off. Weave all ends carefully.
