Tunisian Crochet Basic Stitches

Actual stitches in Tunisian crochet, demonstrating the many looks depending on how you insert your hook. These stitches can be worked as an all-over repeat as shown or they can be worked in combinations.

Tunisian Crochet Alternating Stitch Patterns

These are alternating combinations of stitches forming a stitch pattern. These are stitch patterns that alternate back and forth to create a diagonal layout.

Tunisian Crochet Stacking Stitches

These are stitch patterns created by stacking the same stitches and alternating them with others.

Tunisian Crochet Tall Stitches

As with all of the “tall” stitches in Tunisian crochet, you can usually use any of the Insertion stitches (i.e.; simple, knit, purl, etc.). The stitches are taller and will resemble regular crochet in look and technique. It makes the work progress much more quickly.

Tunisian Crochet Fancy Stitches

All remaining stitches will be in the “Fancy Stitches” category. This includes more extensive use of stitches and the beautiful Tunisian crochet lace.

Just How Many Stitches Are There?

We were asked on my Facebook Page (please feel free to visit and like the page here) about the total number of stitches in Tunisian crochet. Honestly, it could take forever to come up with a definitive response and that still wouldn’t get them all!

Tunisian Crochet Still Shot

Now, keep in mind that this list only includes “stitches”, not stitch patterns. Things like Seed Stitch and Honeycomb Stitch, etc. are combinations of stitches, not actual stitches.

Let’s just do a quick rundown of stitches. It won’t be long before you see why trying to put a number to the different stitches is next to impossible.

6 primary insertion stitches (where you place the hook to pull up a loop):

Tunisian Simple Stitch
Tunisian Reverse Stitch
Tunisian Knit Stitch
Tunisian Purl Stitch
Tunisian Full Stitch
Tunisian Top Stitch (working into the horizontal bar)

Twisted Stitches. We have videos for twisted stitches on the Youtube channel for:

Twisted Simple Stitch
Twisted Purl Stitch
Twisted Knit Stitch

All the twisted stitches can be twisted in either direction, making double the number. And, you can twist other stitches as well, making it even higher.

These are other stitches that can be worked as for any of the insertions making them actually 6 different stitches in 1. For instance, the Tunisian Double can be worked with an insertion of reverse, simple, purl, knit, etc.:

Tunisian Double Stitch
Tunisian Extended Stitch
Tunisian Half Double Stitch
Tunisian Double Extended Stitch
Tunisian Bobble (there are countless numbers of bobbles and clusters, just like regular crochet) Stitch
Tunisian Treble Stitch

With regard to the Purl Stitch, it is actually just a wrapping of a stitch. See the Tunisian Purled Knit Stitch video.

The primary Tunisian Purl Stitch is actually just a “wrapped” Simple Stitch. Keeping that in mind, you can wrap just about any other stitch meaning that everything above is now doubled, but who’s counting? 😉

Anyway, that’s just the tip of the iceberg. There are many, many more. We couldn’t possibly list them all here or even in a book.

The task of coming up with a number would be far too daunting.
