Materials

  • Mary Maxim “Studio”, bulky weight acrylic/wool blend, 160 yds per 100g, shown in color Pottery: 3 skeins
  • Suggested hook size: 7mm
  • Needle (for weaving ends)
  • Three 1″ buttons (or whatever size will fit in the holes created by the stitch pattern)

Gauge

13 sts for 8 rows measures 4″ square

Stitch Multiple

If you would like to make a wider project, the stitch multiple is any multiple of 8, then add 7.

Special Stitches

Front Post Double Crochet (fpdc): Yarn over, insert hook to the side of the indicated stitch, move hook around the back of the stitch and out the other side of same stitch, yarn over, pull loop through, [yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook] twice.

Back Post Double Crochet (bpdc): Yarn over, with hook in back of work, insert hook to the side of the indicated stitch, move hook around the front of the stitch and out the other side of the same stitch (hook is in back of work again), yarn over, pull loop through, [yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook] twice.

Instructions

Row 1: Ch 31, sk 2 ch, hdc in each remaining ch across, turn: 29 hdc.

Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as hdc here and throughout), sk hdc, [fpdc around next 4 sts, bpdc around next 4 sts] 3 times, fpdc around next 4 sts, hdc in top of ch-2 turning ch: 28 dc with 1 hdc at beginning and 1 hdc at end.

Row 3: Ch 2, sk hdc, [bpdc around next 4 sts, fpdc around next 4 sts] 3 times, bpdc around next 4 sts, hdc in top of ch-2 turning ch: 28 dc with 1 hdc at beginning and 1 hdc at end.

Row 4: Rep row 2.

Row 5: Ch 2, sk hdc, [bpdc around next 4 sts, fpdc around next 4 sts] 3 times, bpdc around next 4 sts, hdc in top of ch-2 turning ch: 28 dc with 1 hdc at beginning and 1 hdc at end.

Row 6: Ch 2, sk hdc, [fpdc around next 4 sts, bpdc around next 4 sts] 3 times, fpdc around next 4 sts, hdc in top of ch-2 turning ch: 28 dc with 1 hdc at beginning and 1 hdc at end.

Rows 7-8: Rep rows 5-6.

Rows 9-12: Rep rows 2-3 two times.

Rows 13-68: Rep rows 5-12 seven times.

Rows 69-72: Rep rows 5-8 once more. Fasten off.

Finishing

Weave in all ends securely. Attach buttons on one edge as shown in photo. There are no buttonholes. The stitches are far enough apart to allow the buttons to go through.
