What has drawn me to Courtney Carter is her fabulous use of color. I’ve featured her at Make It Crochet previously and you’ll see more gorgeous color. Here’s what she’s done with the Seasons of Lavender Blanket.
She started off with ten skeins of Michael’s Colorwheel yarn. I don’t know if you’ve seen this yarn, but there are 50 different colors. The skeins are small (90 yards), but this leaves you wide open for designing with lots and lots of color. So, Courtney had these ten skeins of different colors. No, this isn’t the self-striping yarn here. The colors aren’t stopping and starting wherever they fall. The colors here are perfectly and brilliantly planned to give the illusion of a gradient color change in a completely random way. I positively love it.
I did some checking and, after only six months, Colorwheel yarn has been discontinued. It is heavily discounted right now too. It’s really sad, but I think it was just unfortunate timing. The yarn is really fantastic for making your own self-striping colorways, but I think the recent yarnstorm of manufactured gradients and striping cakes killed off any chance of this yarn getting the attention it deserved. What you see looks like it will be all you will be able to get.
You’re still going to be able to make the blanket, of course. You just wouldn’t be able to use the convenient 90-yard skeins. But, that also means that you will be able to make a bigger blanket. 🙂
