My name is Kim Guzman and I love knit ribbing. Yes, yes I do. I love it. It’s stretchy and squishy and wonderful. Naturally, I fell immediately in love with Kelly McClure’s Pioneer Gloves. The ribbing is fabulous but she had me at these perfectly placed, tailored increases.
Kelly has chosen Make 1 Left (M1L) and Make 1 Right (M1R) for this fantastic thumb shaping. There aren’t any holes and everything is just lining up so beautifully, isn’t it? The increases here are just incredible. This is a wonderful, very professional look.
The mitts will start at the little rolled cuff. Yes, I know. There are double-pointed needles involved here and you know that DPNs and I don’t get along that well. I can do it, I just end up with a major Death Grip. The trick for me, though, is to use bigger needles. I may still have a Death Grip, but at least I’ll get gauge!
Now, we’ll separate onto DPNs and work up a little before starting the thumb shaping. You’ll place the thumb stitches on a holder to finish the top of the mitt then go back and finish the thumb. Yes, it really is that easy.
If you need a little help with the increases, I’ve found a great video which I’ve included below. (Thank you, Purl Soho, for the video.)
You will be pleasantly surprised that Kelly has included instructions for three different sizes. You’ll be able to make a set for just about everyone. Just in case you thought she couldn’t top that, she’s also provided instructions for two different lengths, if you prefer the longer length.
I hope you’ll give these mitts a whirl. I have some hand-painted Lucy Neatby in fingering weight that I think would be perfect for these. Wish me luck!
