Free Knit Pattern: Sunny Days Tank

Crochet Tank Top

If you’ve been wanting to try out a knit garment, I find that knitting tank tops is really a great way to start. Not having to deal with the sleeve shaping makes tank tops ideal first garment projects.

This cute little tank is designed in Patons Grace, a 100% sport weight cotton. Cotton is heavier than other fibers, even in a sport weight, so I recommend some prior planning before you begin.

When you create your swatch, you’ll want to wet block it. You’ll also want to smooth it vertically to shape it. You are trying to mimic the effects of gravity on the fiber. You may even want to hang the swatch and perhaps attach a hair clip or something to the bottom to get true swatch measurements. Once your swatch is dry, take your measurements from the inside portion so you aren’t getting abnormal readings from the edge.

You really need to know how the cotton is going to react under pressure. I promise that you will not regret getting this information beforehand.

Front and back instructions are provided and you’ll be seaming the sides and shoulders. It would be fairly easy to convert this project to in-the-round to avoid the side seaming, if you like.

Feel free to put in a lifeline and block out the project mid-way, if you want to ensure you’re working to the correct size You’ll definitely want to block it out at some point before finishing. Always use a lighter weight yarn for your lifeline or, have a look at the video below from Melody’s Makings where she uses dental floss. Genius! (Thank you, Melody!)

Be aware that the neck is more of a full scoop or ballet neck and the straps end at the outer edge of the shoulder. I would need to give extra care to the armhole decreasing because I have a small frame. I also prefer my tank straps to sit further in. Yes, my friends, you can adjust the pattern! That’s the beauty of knitting your own clothing.

The straps and neckline are the most important fit areas for me, so I always use special care. And, once I think I have the right size, I will also hang my newly knitted sweater for a little while to get every bit of growth out of it before I absolutely commit. I can easily take out a few rows from the shoulders, if necessary.
