Measurements

After round 20, hat measures 10″ across (measured flat) and 7″ tall.
After ribbing, hat measures 8.5″ across at bottom (measured flat) and 8″ tall.
Hat is intended for heads measuring 18-20.5″ around, approximately 6-12 years old and some teens. Adjustments will need to be made for bigger or smaller sizes. It’s best to measure the child’s head before beginning.

Materials

  • (A) Red Heart “Hopscotch” (100% acrylic, aran size 4 weight, 210 yds per 4 oz): 1 skein color Bicycle
  • (B) Red Heart “Super Saver” (100% acrylic, aran size 4 weight, 236 yds per 5 oz): small amount (less than 10 yards) color Grey Heather
  • Suggested hook sizes: 7mm and I-9 [5.5mm]
  • Yarn needle
  • Optional Faux Fur Pom Pom

Notes

This project is made in the round from top to bottom. The ribbing is worked vertically to the last round in a join-as-you-go method.

When working the single crochet ribbing, if the last stitch of the row is a bit loopy, work under both loops for the last stitch of a row.

Gauge

After round 3, about 3.25″ across
After round 5, about 5.5″ across

Special Stitches

Front Post Half Double Crochet (FPhdc): Yarn over, insert hook to the side of the indicated stitch, move hook around the back of the stitch and out the other side of same stitch (hook is now in front of the work again), yarn over, pull loop through, yarn over, pull through 3 loops on hook.

Back Post Half Double crochet (BPhdc): Yarn over, with hook in back of work, insert hook to the side of the indicated stitch, move hook around the front of the stitch and out the other side of the same stitch (hook is in back of work again), yarn over, pull loop through, yarn over, pull through 3 loops on hook.

Crochet Pattern Instructions

Round 1: With larger hook and color A, ch 2, 8 hdc in second ch from hook, sl st to top of first hdc: 8 hdc. Gently pull on the initial strand to tighten.

Round 2: Ch 1, 2 hdc in each hdc around, sl st to top of first hdc: 16 hdc.

Round 3: Ch 1, 2 hdc in first hdc, [hdc in next hdc, 2 hdc in next hdc] to last hdc, hdc in last hdc, sl st to top of first hdc: 24 hdc.

Round 4: Ch 1, 2 hdc in first hdc, [hdc in next hdc, 2 hdc in next hdc] to last hdc, hdc in last hdc, sl st to top of first hdc: 36 hdc.

Round 5: Ch 1, 2 hdc in first hdc, [hdc in next 2 hdc, 2 hdc in next hdc] to last 2 hdc, hdc in last 2 hdc, sl st to top of first hdc: 48 hdc.

Round 6: Ch 1, 2 FPhdc in first hdc, [BPhdc in next 2 hdc, 2 FPhdc in next hdc] to last 2 hdc, BPhdc in last 2 hdc, sl st to top of first hdc: 64 hdc.

Rounds 7-8: Ch 1, BPhdc in first and next hdc, [FPhdc in next 2 hdc, BPhdc in next 2 hdc] to last 2 hdc, FPhdc in last 2 hdc, sl st to top of first hdc.

Rounds 9-10: Ch 1, FPhdc in first and next hdc, [BPhdc in next 2 hdc, FPhdc in next 2 hdc] to last 2 hdc, BPhdc in last 2 hdc, sl st to top of first hdc.

Rounds 11-18: Rep rounds 7-10.

Rounds 19-20: Rep rounds 7-8. Fasten off after final round.

Ribbing

Row 1: With smaller hook, join B with sl st at last st worked, ch 5, sc in second ch from hook and in next 3 ch, on hat body sk 1 hdc from round 20, sl st in next hdc, turn ribbing.

Row 2: Working in back loops only, sc in 4 sc, turn ribbing.

Row 3: Ch 1, working in back loops only, sc in 4 sc, on hat body, sk 1 sc from round 20, sl st in next sc, turn ribbing.

Rep rows 2-3 until all hdc used or skipped from round 20, fasten off.

Seaming

With yarn needle, seam top of last row of Ribbing to bottom of first row of Ribbing.

Finishing

Weave in ends carefully. Attach pom pom, if desired.
