Finished Size

Intended to fit a baby girl of approximately 6 months to 12 months with approximately 17″ to 18″ chest measurement. (Craft Yarn Council’s YarnStandards average size measurements used.)

Materials

  • Sirdar Snuggly DK (nylon/acrylic blend) (179 yds per 50g): color #188 (A) 2 skeins, color #251 (B) 1 skein, color #420 (C) 2 skeins
  • Suggested crochet hook: size G-6 (4mm)
  • Yarn needle (for seaming and weaving ends)

Gauge

Determining a concise 4″ square gauge is not practical for this design due to the fluctuation of stitches in each row.

After completion of rows 1 through 11, measurement along the stitches is 13.5″. Measurement along the rows at the single crochet side is 2.5″. Measurement along the rows at the crossed stitches side is 4.75″.

Notes

Skirting is made first and worked vertically (side-to-side). Stitches are picked up along the ends of the single crochet rows to make the yoke.

Special Stitches

Crossed Treble Crochet (cross): Sk sc, tr in next sc, working in front of tr just worked, tr in skipped sc (cross made). Note: Do not work around the first tr. Push it out of the way and work into the skipped sc as a completely different stitch. It should lay directly on top of the first tr and they should be crossed.

Picot: Ch 4, sl st in fourth ch from hook, ch 6, sl st in same ch as previous sl st, ch 4, sl st in same ch as previous sl st.

Single Crochet 2 Together (sc2tog): Insert hook in st indicated, yarn over, pull lp through, insert hook in next st, yarn over, pull lp through, yarn over, pull through 3 lps on hook.

Skirting

Row 1: With A, ch 55, sk first ch, sc in each remaining ch across, turn–54 sc.

Row 2 (RS): Ch 1, sc in first sc and next 9 sc, hdc in next 10 sc, dc in next 10 sc, 12 cross (see Special Stitches above), turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in first st and in each remaining st across, turn–54 sc.

Rows 4-11: Rep rows 2-3. On final row, switch to B on final st.

Row 12: With B, ch 1, sc in first sc and in each sc across, turn–54 sc.

Row 13: Picot (see Special Stitches above), sc in first sc and in each sc across, switch to C on final st, turn–54 sc.

Rows 14-23: Rep rows 2-11. On final row, switch to B on final st.

Rows 24-25: Rep rows 12-13. On final row, switch to A on final st.

Rows 26-97: Rep rows 2-25. Fasten off after final row.
