A child’s pullover suitable for a boy or girl.
Technique: Regular Crochet
Materials
- Sirdar Snuggly DK (50g/1.76 oz/176 yds per ball, 55% nylon/45% acrylic) used in sample: 1 (2, 2, 2, 2) balls each of 358 Honey (A), 378 Khaki (B), 357 Burnt Orange (C) and 354 Bluebell or 180 (210, 240, 275, 300) yds of each color
- Suggested hook sizes: H (5mm) and F (3.75mm) (or sizes needed to meet gauge)
- Tapestry needle (for weaving ends)
Finished Sizes
Instructions are written for child sizes 2 (4, 6, 8 and 10). Model is made in size 2.

Gauge
With larger hook, in garment stitch pattern, 13 sts for 13 rows measures 4″.
Special Stitches
Front Post Double Crochet (FPdc): Yarn over, insert hook from side of indicated stitch, going around the back of indicated stitch and from back to front on opposite side of indicated stitch, yarn over, pull loop through (3 loops on hook), continue double crochet normally.
Back Post Double Crochet (BPdc): Yarn over, insert hook from back to front at side of indicated stitch, going around the front of indicated stitch and from front to back on opposite side of indicated stitch, yarn over, pull loop through (3 loops on hook), continue double crochet normally.
Notes
To maintain established stitch pattern: once the stitch pattern is established of staggered crochet/double crochet, you will need to adjust the stitch pattern as necessary when making increases and decreases.
Instructions
Back
Row 1: (Ribbing) With smaller hook and A, ch 41 (45, 47, 51, 53). Hdc in third ch from hook and in each rem ch across, turn. (Ch 2 at beginning of row counts as first hdc of row here and throughout.)
Row 2: Ch 2, sk first st, [FPdc, BPdc] to last st, hdc in last st, turn–40 (44, 46, 50, 52) sts.
Rep previous row 3 (3, 5, 5, 7) times more.
Next row: (RS) With larger hook, ch 1, sc in each st across, change to B on final st, turn, cut off A–40 (44, 46, 50, 52) sc.
Next row: With B, sc in first st, [dc in next st, sc in next st] to last st, dc in last st, changing to C on final st, turn, do not cut off.
Carry unused colors up the side of project without cutting off. Rep prev row, changing colors as: B, C, D, B, C, D, etc. until a total of 22 (24, 24, 26, 28) rows have been completed above Ribbing, cut off all colors.
Maintaining established color pattern, count across 4 (5, 5, 6, 7) sts and join yarn with sl st, continue in established stitch pattern to last 4 (5, 5, 6, 7) sts, turn, leaving remaining sts unworked–32 (34, 36, 38, 38).
Continue on established stitches, stitch pattern and color pattern until 14 (16, 18, 20, 20) rows have been completed for Armhole.
Shoulder
Continue across 5 (6, 6, 7, 7) sts only, turn, leaving remaining sts unworked.
Next 2 rows: Continue on 5 (6, 6, 7, 7) sts only in established color and stitch pattern, fasten off.
Opposite Shoulder
Count across 5 (6, 6, 7, 7) sts from opposite armhole, join yarn with sl st, continue across 5 (6, 6, 7, 7) sts across, turn.
Next 2 rows: Continue on 5 (6, 6, 7, 7) sts only in established color and stitch pattern, fasten off.
Front
Work as for Back up to 6 (8, 10, 12, 12) rows completed for armhole.
Shoulder
Continue across 9 (10, 10, 11, 11) sts only, turn, leaving remaining sts unworked.
Sl st across 2 sts, continue across 7 (8, 8, 9, 9) sts, turn.
Continue across 5 (6, 6, 7, 7) sts only, turn, leaving remaining sts unworked.
Continue on 5 (6, 6, 7, 7) sts only for 8 (8, 8, 8, 8) more rows, fasten off.
Opposite Shoulder
Count across 9 (10, 10, 11, 11) sts from opposite armhole, join yarn with sl st, continue across 9 (10, 10, 11, 11) sts across, turn.
Continue across 7 (8, 8, 9, 9) sts only, turn, leaving remaining sts unworked.
Sl st across 2 sts, continue across 5 (6, 6, 7, 7) sts.
Continue on 5 (6, 6, 7, 7) sts only for 8 (8, 8, 8, 8) more rows, fasten off.
Sleeve (Make 2)
Row 1: (Ribbing) With smaller hook and A, ch 37 (39, 41, 41, 41). Hdc in third ch from hook and in each rem ch across, turn. (Ch 2 at beginning of row counts as first hdc of row here and throughout.)
Row 2: Ch 2, sk first st, [FPdc, BPdc] to last st, hdc in last st, turn–36 (38, 40, 40, 40) sts.
Rep previous row 3 (3, 3, 3, 3) times more.
Next row: (RS) With larger hook, ch 1, sc in each st across, change to B on final st, turn, cut off A–36 (38, 40, 40, 40) sc.
Next row: With B, sc in first st, [dc in next st, sc in next st] to last st, dc in last st, changing to C on final st, turn, do not cut off.
Carry unused colors up the side of project without cutting off. Rep prev row, changing colors as: B, C, D, B, C, D, etc. until a total of 25 (25, 21, 13, 17) rows have been completed above Ribbing.
Increasing
Maintain stitch pattern and color pattern throughout.
Next row: Work 2 sts in first st, continue across to last st, work 2 sts in last st, turn–38 (40, 42, 42, 42) sts.
Next row: Continue across on established sts.
Rep prev 2 rows: 0 (0, 1, 3, 3) times more. Sizes 6 (8, 10): 44 (48, 48) sts.
Next 1 (1, 5, 13, 13) rows: Continue across on established sts, fasten off.
Seaming
With yarn needle and RS facing each other, seam sides, shoulder and sleeves.
Neckline Trim
With small hook and A, join yarn with sl st at any shoulder, ch 2, work 71 (73, 77, 81, 81) hdc evenly around entire neckline, sl st to top of beg ch-2. Ch 1, FPdc around beg ch-2, [BPdc, FPdc] to last hdc, BPdc, sl st to first FPdc, ch 1, FPdc around same FPdc as joining, [BPdc, FPdc] to last BPdc, BPdc, sl sto to first FPdc, fasten off, weave in all ends securely.
