Using a fine weight yarn is perfect for delicate baby things, but finding patterns can be a challenge.
Here’s a super quick and classy design. You can make several of these adorable beanies and you can have one for every outfit.

Technique: Regular Crochet
Finished Size
Hat body 14″, lower edge 12″, height 4.75″ (to fit newborn to 3 months)
According to the CDC, a newly-born baby can have a head circumference of 12″ to 15″. The best any crochet or knit pattern can do (even ready-to-wear purchased from a store) is give you an average.
With a pattern, you can adjust size slightly with your tension or you can allow the baby to grow into it. A hat labeled newborn will never mean that it will necessarily fit every single newborn straight out of the hospital.
Materials
- Cascade 220 Fingering weight yarn (100% Peruvian Highland Wool, 273 yds per 50g): One hank (or approximately 130 yards)
- Suggested hook sizes: H-8 [5mm] (larger hook) and G-7 [4mm] (smaller hook)
- Stitch marker (or small piece of scrap yarn)
- Needle (for weaving ends)

After round 3, approx. 2.75″

Special Stitches
Front Post Double Crochet (fpdc): Yarn over, insert hook to the side of the indicated stitch, move hook around the back of the stitch and out the other side of same stitch, yarn over, pull loop through, [yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook] twice.
Front Post Treble Crochet (fptr): Yarn over twice, insert hook to the side of the indicated stitch, move hook around the back of the stitch and out the other side of same stitch, yarn over, pull loop through, [yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook] 3 times.
Back Post Double Crochet (bpdc): Yarn over, with hook in back of work, insert hook to the side of the indicated stitch, move hook around the front of the stitch and out the other side of the same stitch (hook is in back of work again), yarn over, pull loop through, [yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook] twice.
Back Post Half Double Crochet (bphdc): Yarn over, with hook in back of work, insert hook to the side of the indicated stitch, move hook around the front of the stitch and out the other side of the same stitch (hook is in back of work again), yarn over, pull loop through, yarn over, pull through 3 loops on hook.
Front Post Half Double Crochet (fphdc): Yarn over, insert hook to the side of the indicated stitch, move hook around the back of the stitch and out the other side of same stitch, yarn over, pull loop through, yarn over, pull through 3 loops on hook.

Round 1: With larger hook, ch 3, skip 2 ch (counts as first hdc), 7 hdc in next ch, sl st to top of beginning ch-2: 8 hdc.
Round 2: Ch 1, 2 fpdc around each hdc, sk initial ch 1, sl st to first dc: 16 dc.
Round 3: Ch 1, 2 fpdc around each dc, sk initial ch 1, sl st to first dc: 32 dc.
Round 4: Ch 1, 2 fpdc around first dc, fpdc around next dc, [2 fpdc around next dc, fpdc around next dc] around, sk initial ch 1, sl st to first dc: 48 dc.
