Elegant Chenille Poncho

Technique: Regular Crochet
This is another view of the poncho in a solid color. Note that it is regular fringe. I found that regular fringe was not satisfactory with chenille because it shed badly. For the actual pattern, I used chain loop fringe which worked out much better. This picture isn’t me; it’s my lovely sister.

- CA – 3 skeins Lion Brand Chenille “Thick & Quick” (Purple)
- CB – 1 skein Lion Brand Chenille “Thick & Quick” (Amethyst Print)
- Crochet Hooks Sizes: N and P
- Lg. Yarn Needle (for weaving ends)
- Ruler or Measuring Tape
- Plastic Stitch Markers (optional)
Gauge Gauge is not entirely important when completing this project. However, after completing the Foundation Row, it should measure approximately 24-26 inches in width.
Modified Double Crochet (Mod Dc): YO, insert hook in sp indicated, YO and pull lp through (3 lps on hook). YO, pull through 1 lp (3 lps on hook). (YO, pull through 2 lps) twice. This creates a “foot” at the bottom of the double crochet, which is the proper location of placement for the next st.
Front Post Double Crochet (FPdc): YO. Insert hook from front to back on the right side of the dc. Going around the post of the dc, insert hook from back to front on the left side of the dc. Continue working dc normally.
Back Post Double Crochet (BPdc): YO. Insert hook from back to front on the right side of the dc. Going around the post of the dc, insert hook from front to back on the left side of the dc. Continue working dc normally.
Foundation Row: With larger hook and CA, ch 4. Work Mod Dc (see Special Stitches above) in fourth ch from hook. * Work Mod Dc (see Special Stitches above) in the bottom lp (the “foot”) of prior Mod Dc. Rep from * until 40 Mod Dc have been completed. Work standard dc in the bottom lp of prior Mod Dc. Without twisting the dc row, sl st to the top of the beg ch 4. With yarn needle, close the bottom of the dc row by attaching the beg “tail” to the bottom of the opposite side.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in same sp as joining. * Ch 3, sc in the next st. Rep from * around. Ch 3. Sl st to the first sc.
Rnd 2: Sl st to within the first ch-3 lp. Ch 1, sc in same lp. * Ch 3, sc in next ch-3 lp. Rep from * around. Ch 3. Sl st to the first sc.
Rep Rnd 2 until piece measures 13″ from beg.
Note: Place marker or small piece of contrasting yarn at the beg of each new row to ensure proper placement of the ending sl st.
Final Row: Sl st to within the first ch-3 lp. Ch 1. * (Work sc, ch 10, sc) in ch-3 lp. Rep from * around. Sl st to first sc. Fasten off.
Mock Neck Ribbing
Rnd 1: With CB and smaller hook, join yarn at the neck edge of the beg ch 4. Ch 1. Work FPdc (see Special Stitches) around the same ch-4. * BPdc around the next dc, FPdc around the next dc. Rep from * around to within the last st. BPdc around the last dc. Sl st to the first FPdc.
Rnd 2: Ch 1. Work FPdc around the same st as joining. * BPdc around the next st, FPdc around the next st. Rep from * around to within the last st. BPdc around the last st. Sl st to the first FPdc.
Rep Rnd 2 until Ribbing measures 4″. Fasten off. Weave in all ends carefully with yarn needle.
