Materials

  • Crochet Hook Sizes: I (5.5mm) and H (5mm) (or sizes necessary to obtain gauge)
  • Patons Decor worsted weight yarn (100g/3.5 oz/210 yds): 4 (4, 4, 5) skeins or 745 (785, 830, 865) yds in main color (CA) and 1 (1, 1, 1) skeins or 25 (27, 29, 34) yds in contrasting color (CB)
  • Yarn Needle
  • Ruler or Measuring Tape

Gauge

A swatch worked in Stitch Pattern 1 across 18 stitches for 16 rows measures 4″ x 4″. A swatch worked in Stitch Pattern 2 across 16 stitches for 19 rows equals 4.5″ x 4.5″.

Special Stitches

Back Loop Single Crochet (BLsc): insert hook in top loop furthest away from you, yarn over, pull loop through, yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook.

Short Single Crochet (Ssc): insert hook from bottom to top under horizontal bar below the top loops of stitch, yarn over, pull loop through, yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook.

Long Single Crochet (Lsc): skip two rows, insert hook from front to back in single crochet of next row, yarn over, pull loop through, pull up on loops until they meet the height of your current row, yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook. Do not work into the single crochet from the top of the current row. The Lsc will overlap it and you will not stitch into it.

Front Post Double Crochet (FPdc): yarn over, insert hook from front to back of indicated double crochet, with hook wrapping around the post of the double crochet and inserting hook from back to front on the opposite side of same double crochet, yarn over, pull loop through, [yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook] twice.

Back Post Double Crochet (BPdc): yarn over, insert hook from back to front of indicated double crochet, with hook wrapping around the post of the double crochet and inserting hook from front to back on the opposite side of same double crochet, yarn over, pull loop through, [yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook] twice.

Stitch Pattern 1

Ch the number indicated in the pattern.

Row 1: Sk first ch, sc in each ch across, turn.

Row 2: Ch 1, Ssc across, turn.

Row 3: [Mark as RS] Ch 1, BLsc across, turn.

Rep rows 2-3 for pattern.

Stitch Pattern 2

After changing colors, do not cut yarn. Carry it up the side to be used in the next color change. With CA, ch the number indicated.

Row 1: Sk first ch, sc in each ch across, turn.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, changing to CB on last sc, turn.

Row 3: With CB, ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn.

Row 4: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, changing to CA on last sc, turn.

Row 5: [Mark as RS] With CA, ch 1, *sc in each of next 3 sc, Lsc over next sc, rep from * to last 3 sc, sc in each of last 3 sc, turn.

Row 6: Ch 1, sc across, changing to CB on last sc, turn.

Rows 7-8: Rep rows 3-4.

Row 9: With CA, ch 1, sc in first sc, *Lsc over next sc, sc in each of next 3 sc, rep from * to last 2 sc, Lsc over next sc, sc in last sc, turn.

Row 10: Ch 1, sc across, changing to CB on last sc, turn.

Rep rows 3-10 for pattern.

BACK

The entire Back is worked from side-to-side in Stitch Pattern 1.

Step 1: With larger hook and CA, ch 18 (20, 22, 24), beg working in Stitch Pattern 1 until a total of 4 (4, 6, 6) rows have been completed, turn.

Step 2: Ch 20 (22, 24, 26), sk first ch, sc in each remaining ch, continue working in Stitch Pattern 1 until a total of 8 (10, 12, 12) rows have been completed from BEGINNING. BEGINNING means the first row of Step 1. 36 (40, 44, 48) sc.

Step 3: Sl st in first sc, continue across in Stitch Pattern 1. 35 (39, 43, 47) sc.

Step 4: Continue across in Stitch Pattern 1 to last sc, turn, leaving last sc unworked. 34 (38, 42, 46) sc.

Step 5: Rep step 3. 33 (37, 41, 45) sc.

Step 6: Continue in Stitch Pattern 1 until a total of 34 (36, 38, 40) rows have been completed from beginning.

Step 7: Ch 2, sk first ch, sc in next ch and continue across in Stitch Pattern 1. 34 (38, 42, 46) sc.

Step 8: Continue in Stitch Pattern 1 to last sc, 2 sc in last sc. 35 (39, 43, 47) sc.

Step 9: Rep Step 7. 36 (40, 42, 48) sc.

Step 10: Continue in Stitch Pattern 1 until a total of 41 (45, 47, 49) rows have been completed from beginning.

Step 11: Continue in Stitch Pattern 1 across 17 (19, 21, 23) sc only, turn, leaving remaining sc unworked.

Step 12: Continue in Stitch Pattern 1 across only 17 (19, 21, 23) sc until a total of 45 (49, 53, 55) rows have been completed from beginning, fasten off.

Step 13: (Ribbing) With smaller hook and CA, join yarn with sl st on RS at bottom of garment, ch 2, work 43 (47, 51, 53) dc evenly across bottom, turn.

Step 14: Ch 2, sk first st, *FPdc around next dc, BPdc around next dc, rep from * to last dc, hdc in last dc, turn.

Step 15: Rep Step 14 twice more, fasten off.

FRONT

The center insert portion is worked first from bottom edge to neckline. Then stitches are picked up along either side to work side-to-side.

Step 1: With CA and larger hook, ch 16 (16, 16, 16), beg working in Stitch Pattern 2 until a total of 34 (38, 42, 50) rows have been completed from beg, fasten off.

Step 2: With larger hook and CA, join yarn with sl st to RS on long edge of center insert, ch 1, work 33 (37, 41, 45) sc evenly across.

Step 3: Ch 2, sk first ch, sc in next ch and continue across in Stitch Pattern 1. 34 (38, 42, 46) sc.

Step 4: Continue in Stitch Pattern 1 to last sc, 2 sc in last sc. 35 (39, 43, 47) sc.

Step 5: Rep Step 3. 36 (40, 44, 48) sc.

Step 6: Continue in Stitch Pattern 1 until a total of 8 (10, 10, 10) rows have been completed from beginning (Step 2 is the beginning).

Step 7: Continue in Stitch Pattern 1 across 17 (19, 21, 23) sc only, turn, leaving remaining sc unworked.

Step 8: Continue in Stitch Pattern 1 across only 17 (19, 21, 23) sc until a total of 12 (14, 16, 16) rows have been completed from beginning, fasten off.

Step 9: With larger hook and CA, join yarn with sl st to RS on opposite long edge of center insert, ch 1, work 33 (37, 41, 45) sc evenly across, turn.

Step 10: Continue in Stitch Pattern 1 to last sc, 2 sc in last sc. 34 (38, 42, 46) sc.

Step 11: Ch 2, sk first ch, sc in next ch and continue across in Stitch Pattern 1. 35 (39, 43, 47) sc.

Step 12: Rep Step 10. 36 (40, 44, 48) sc.

Step 13: Continue in Stitch Pattern 1 until a total of 8 (10, 10, 10) rows have been completed from beginning (Step 9 is the beginning), fasten off.

Step 14: Sk 19 (21, 23, 25) sc, join CA with sl st in next sc, ch 1, continue in Stitch Pattern 1 across remaining sc. 17 (19, 21, 23) sc.

Step 15: Continue in Stitch Pattern 1 across only 17 (19, 21, 23) sc until a total of 12 (14, 16, 16) rows have been completed from beginning, fasten off.

Step 16: (Ribbing) Rep Steps 13-15 of Back.

Step 17: With yarn needle and WS facing, seam shoulders. With RS facing, join CA with smaller hook at either shoulder seam, ch 1, work 58 (58, 58, 62) sc evenly around neckline, sl st to first sc.

Step 18: Ch 1, sc in each sc around, sl st to first sc.

Step 19: Ch 1, Lsc around, sl st to first sc, fasten off.

SLEEVE (make 2)

The entire Sleeve is worked from side-to-side in Stitch Pattern 1.

Step 1: With larger hook and CA, ch 23 (25, 31, 37), beg working in Stitch Pattern 1 until a total of 25 (27, 27, 31) rows have been completed.

Step 2: Continue in Stitch Pattern 1 across 18 (20, 26, 32) sc only, turn, leaving remaining sc unworked.

Step 3: Sl st in first 4 sc, continue in Stitch Pattern 1 across. 14 (16, 22, 28) sc.

For size 24 months only: Continue in Stitch Pattern 1 to last 4 sc, turn, leaving remaining sc unworked. (24 sc). Rep Step 3. (20 sc)

Step 4: Continue in Stitch Pattern 1 to last 2 sc, turn, leaving remaining sc unworked. 12 (14, 20, 18) sc.

Step 5: Sl st in first 2 sc, continue in Stitch Pattern 1 across. 10 (12, 18, 16) sc.

Step 6: Rep Steps 4 and 5 once (twice, three, twice) more. 6 (4, 6, 8) sc. Fasten off sizes 12 months and 18 months.

For sizes 9 months and 24 months only: Rep Step 4. 4 (6) sc.

Step 7: With larger hook and CA, join yarn with sl st on opposite side of foundation ch made in Step 1 with WS facing, ch 1, work 22 (24, 30, 36) sc across, turn.

Step 8: Working in Stitch Pattern 1, work sc across 18 (20, 26, 32) sc only, leaving remaining sc unworked.

Step 9: Sl st in each of 4 sc, working in Stitch Pattern 1, sc across. 14 (16, 22, 28) sc.

For size 24 months only: Continue in Stitch Pattern 1 to last 4 sc, turn, leaving remaining sc unworked. (24 sc). Rep Step 9. (20 sc)

Step 10: Rep as for first side of Sleeve, beginning with Step 4, fasten off.

Step 11: (Ribbing) With smaller hook and CA, join yarn with sl st on RS at bottom of sleeve, ch 2, work 25 (27, 27, 31) dc evenly across bottom, turn.

Step 12: Ch 2, sk first st, *FPdc around next dc, BPdc around next dc, rep from * to last dc, hdc in last dc, turn.

Step 13: Rep Step 12 twice more, fasten off.

FINISHING

Seam sleeves into armhole opening, seam bottom of sleeve, seam sides of garment. Weave in all ends securely.
