Sizes

Finished Garment Chest Measurements: 36 (40, 44, 50)”. All sizes are written for the smallest size indicated, with size changes in parentheses. If there is only one number, it is the same for all sizes. Choose a size that is at least two inches more than actual chest measurement. Fluctuations in gauge may cause changes in finished size and a need for additional materials.

Materials

  • Size H (5mm) double-ended Tunisian hook
  • Size K (6.5mm) Tunisian hook (or size to obtain gauge)
  • Size H (5mm) regular crochet hook
  • Red Heart Soft* (100% acrylic/5 oz.): 2 (2, 2, 2) skeins Wheat (CA) and 8 (9, 11, 12) skeins Aran (CB)
  • Open ring stitch markers or contrasting pieces of yarn
  • Yarn needle
  • Ruler or Measuring Tape

Note About Yarn Used

This garment was made with original Red Heart Soft which was a lighter weight than the current Red Heart Soft. It was more of a light worsted. A light worsted or perhaps a DK weight yarn is suggested for this garment.

Special Stitches

Tunisian Simple Stitch (tss): Insert hook in a side-to-side motion under the front vertical bar, yarn over, pull up a loop.

Tunisian Knit Stitch (tks): Insert hook between front and back vertical bars of the same stitch, coming out at back of work, yarn over, pull up loop.

Tunisian Reverse Stitch (trs): With hook behind work, insert hook from side to side under back vertical bar, always keeping hook to back of work, yarn over, pull up loop.

Please see my Videos for further instruction on these Tunisian crochet stitches.

Front Post Double Crochet (FPdc): Yarn over, insert hook from side of indicated stitch, going around the back of indicated stitch and from back to front on opposite side of indicated stitch, yarn over, pull loop through (3 loops on hook), continue double crochet normally.

Back Post Double Crochet (BPdc): Yarn over, insert hook from back to front at side of indicated stitch, going around the front of indicated stitch and from front to back on opposite side of indicated stitch, yarn over, pull loop through (3 loops on hook), continue double crochet normally.

Gauge

A swatch worked on 18 stitches for 20 rows, worked in Diagonal Stitch Pattern with size K Tunisian hook, measures approximately 4″ square.

Notes

To bind off stitches, insert hook under indicated vertical bar (maintaining Stitch Pattern, yarn over, pull loop through vertical bar and loop on hook. (Slip Stitch Bind Off made.)

To decrease by one stitch at the beginning of a row, (maintaining Stitch Pattern) skip the first vertical bar, insert hook under two vertical bars (at the same time) before pulling up a loop.

To decrease by one stitch at the end of a row, (maintaining Stitch Pattern) pull up loops for all stitches to last two vertical bars, insert hook under two vertical bars (at the same time) before pulling up a loop.

To increase by one stitch at the beginnning of a row, skip first vertical bar, insert hook in first loop from row below to pull up the additional loop.

To increase by one stitch at the end of a row, once all loops for the row are on hook, insert hook in last loop from row below to pull up the additional loop.

When attaching a new skein of yarn, only attach at the beginning or ending of a row.

Back

Ribbing

Note: In the past, you may have only worked with two separate colors when working witha double-ended Tunisian hook. For the ribbing of this garment, you will be working with two skeins of the same color. Therefore, you will need to pay close attention to when you turn the project to begin using the other skein of yarn. Always remember that when the hook is full of the indicated loops, you will turn and begin using the other skein.
