Special Stitches

This stitch pattern uses several different stitches and insertions. Review the following:

Tunisian Reverse Stitch (trs): Insert hook in a side to side motion (right to left for right-handers or left to right for left-handers) under back vertical bar, yarn over, pull loop through. The hook stays in the back of the work throughout the stitch. Click here for more information on Tunisian Reverse Stitch.

Tunisian Chain Back Bar Stitch (tchbs): For this stitch, you will work into the closing chain, sometimes known as the horizontal bar. Since these are only chains, it has the usual three bars to each chain. With the chain upside down so the back horizontal bar is exposed at the top, insert hook from front to back under the back bar of the chain, yarn over, pull loop through. Click here for more information on Tunisian Chain Back Bar Stitch.

Tunisian Drop Stitch: This is an elongated stitch. You pull up a loop as instructed. In this stitch pattern, you will use the Tunisian Reverse Stitch orientation. Then, you make a yarn over. You’ll need to hold the yarn over in place while pulling up the next loop. When you close the stitches, you drop all the yarn overs. Click here for more information Tunisian Drop Stitch.

Tunisian Crochet Pattern Instructions

Instructions:

Foundation:
A: Ch any number, sk first ch, *insert hook in next ch, yo, pull lp through, leave lp on hook, rep from * across.
B: Ch 1, [yo, pull through 2 lps on hook] across, 1 lp remains.

Row 1:
A: Ch 1, sk first vertical bar, *insert hook as for Tunisian Reverse Stitch (see Special Stitches above), yo, pull lp through, yo and hold the yo in place with your index finger to make the next st, rep from * to last st, insert hook in top of last st, yo, pull lp through.
B: Ch 2 (closing the first st), [remove working lp from hook, allow yo to drop from hook, replace working lp, yo, pull through 2 lps on hook] to last st, yo, pull through 2 lps on hook.

Row 2:
A: Sk first vertical bar, tchbs to last st, insert hook under two outer vertical bars of last st, yo, pull lp through.
B: Ch 1, [yo, pull through 2 lps on hook] across, 1 lp remains.

Rep rows 1-2 for pattern.

Notes: Unlike regular crochet, the yarn over that creates the drop stitch is actually at the end of the pull-loop-through portion. You will see above that each of the stray yarn overs are after you’ve pull up the loop instead of before. This takes some getting accustomed. It works the same way with half double crochet in Tunisian. The yarn over goes with the loop you’ve just created, not the one before.
